Welcome to the Great Steampunk Debate!

Hello! And welcome to the Great Steampunk Debate 2010!

Before you go any further, we recommend that you take a look at our guidelines for participants in the debate.

The Great Steampunk Debate has been organised by those involved in the creation and maintenance of many of steampunk's magazines, websites, groups and communities for the purposes of exploring steampunk ideology.

What is the Great Steampunk Debate?

Here, you will find discussion on ideology, beliefs, politics, ethics, and how all of these things intersect with steampunk (if they, in fact, intersect at all). What you will not find here is a place to argue, flame, or make personal attacks against people. These things are divisive to our community, and one of the main aims of this debate is to encourage us all to explore our differences, and then set them aside in recognition of the fact that we are all one community.

In recent years steampunk has become increasingly divided and fragmentary, and this could threaten the integrity of our community, if we let it. None of us here want to see that happen, and as such we feel as though it is important for people to have a welcoming, neutral space in which we can discuss our differences, and move beyond them.

The Great Steampunk Debate is not about 'winning' any argument, rather, it is a chance for us all to grow and develop together as a group.

How Does The Debate Work?

Within this website, you will find a number of different forums dedicated to discussions in different areas of steampunk. Within each of these areas, there are some 'official' questions clearly presented at the top of each forum in which we encourage you to participate.

These forums are also places for you to post any questions, ideas and discussions of your own which fall within these appropriate areas. Feel free to create as many new threads, questions and debates as you like, so long as they are in keeping with our participation guidelines.

There are also a number of ancillary forums such as the Off Topic area (where you can chill out, relax, play games and shoot the breeze with the people that you've just been arguing about environmentalism with), and the Great Steampunk Census which is there so that you can create polls and put them to the whole community.

How Long Does The Debate Last?

The Debate begins on 1st May 2010, and will run until 30th June. After this point, we will be encouraging people to post their reactions to the debate in their own blogs and websites and share their summaries and thoughts with others.
